Getting more reviews AND referrals through Email Marketing Automation is so powerful for small business. So what’s the best way to kill two birds with one stone and gain both reviews and referrals at the same time?

– Email automation is the key to making this work. Make sure you have an email marketing tool that allows you to create automated email journeys. If you don’t have one, checkout Marketing 360’s nurture tools.

– Once you have a good email automation tool you like using, create your journey! Your journey should start with an email thanking you past customer for their business and a simple “We’d really appreciate it if you’d take a quick second and provide us your feedback” headline with two simple button options below that…a Thumbs Up and a Thumbs Down button. When the thumbs up button is clicked it should lead to the review site of your choice so they can leave a review, when the thumbs down button is clicked it should lead to a feedback form on your website to gather more information so you an use that to make it right with the customer and also improve as a company.

– If somebody clicks the thumbs up button, wait a few days and have an email sent to them automatically asking for a referral! Say something like…”We wanted to thank you again for your business. It’s greatly appreciated. If there’s anybody you know who you feel would also be interested in our products/services we’d be ecstatic if you’d tell them about us. There is a new customer discount offer below you can gift them with! Simply forward this email to them or screenshot the offer and send them via text or social media! The automated email journey would end at this point.

– If somebody does not click the thumbs up or down button, send them a reminder for a review 2-3 days after the first email. In the second email, it’s a good idea to include a link to your 2nd best review platform you’d like to build reviews on, that way, you diversify your reviews because a certain percentage of customers will leave a review on the 1st email, and another percentage will on the 2nd email, etc. Of course if they click the thumbs up at any point, follow up with the referral email. Repeat this process 3-4 times. No more than 4. 3 is ideal. Asking for a review more than 3 times starts to get annoying. Try to keep all 3 requests inside 10 days. After the 3rd request end the journey.

– To summarize, if they click thumbs up, follow up asking for a referral and then end the journey. If they click thumbs down, send them to a feedback form and end the journey. If they don’t click anything, send them up to 3-4 reminders inside 10 days and then end the journey if no clicks. With each round of review requests, use a different review platform link starting with the most important to least.
